To get started with generic IM ketamine in an out-patient setting, the following things are needed, at a minimum:
ESSENTIAL PREPARATION FOR THE PROVIDER
Training (including different routes of administration of ketamine; different dosing strategies; inclusion criteria for ketamine treatment; exclusion criteria for ketamine treatment; recognizing and managing adverse reactions, etc.)
Patient forms and chart forms
BLS or CPR training
Clear emergency plans for medical and psychological adverse reactions
Check with your malpractice insurance carrier regarding coverage
BASIC KETAMINE KIT
Ketamine (from medical supply company)
Syringes (e.g., 3 cc, 25 g, 1″)
Sharps container (for used syringes)
Alcohol wipes
Gauze pads
Band-aids
Gloves
Locked storage
MONITORING EQUIPMENT
Blood pressure cuff
Stethoscope
Pulse oximeter
MEDICATION FOR ADVERSE REACTIONS
Medication for nausea, such as Zofran
Medication for high blood pressure, such as Clonidine and/or Propanolol
Medication for anxiety, agitation or seizure, such as injectable Ativan
Medication for headache, such as Tylenol
